The "21st Primary School of Heraklion" is situated on the outskirts of the biggest city of Crete and was founded in 1899 making it one of the oldest schools on the island. It’s in a prominent position with panoramic views of the entire city and is actually built on a fort, "The Fortetsa Fortress" thus the name of the area in which the school was built. Our students aged 6-12 are taught by a devoted team of teachers both in the morning and afternoon zones including learning support teachers for students needing additional help. There are 2 classes in each grade, 12 in total.
All our students learn English from Grade C and onwards. Additionally, from Grade E they learn either French or German. Music, Digital Studies, Drama and Art are as an important factor in the school syllabus as Numeracy and Literacy and many of our students show interest in the Sciences and Physical Education. Our students are also actively involved in programmes that bring a social dimension to their learning such as school bullying, nutrition and healthy lifestyle, the environment and road safety. The motto of our school is to try our hardest as to overcome any obstacle we may encounter.
There are many archaeological sites of interest in Heraklion including the world famous "Minoan Palace of Knossos" just a short walking distance from our school. Knossos is the oldest European city known, built in the Bronze Age and the center of the first brilliant European civilization, the Minoan. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is full of myths and legends… Minos, Labyrinth, Daedalus, Minotaur, Theseus, Ariadne…
